Cancelling

The “Come, Follow Me” reading assignment for this past week came from the book of Job. One of the messages of this book has particular relevance for our time. Job’s friends were so committed to the idea that God always rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked that they couldn’t fully sympathize with their friend. In the end, God condemned them for that. In a time when it’s become common for people to “cancel” those they have political disagreements with, it’s good to be reminded that our ideologies are supposed to help us learn how to treat each other better, and not provide excuses for expressing cruelty.
