Books

April 22, 2022

I have a couple of book recommendations today.

A while back, Sarah Hoyt posted several modern-day fairy tales on her blog, and I linked to them here. Now she’s collected them into a book: Odd Magics. I really enjoyed these stories and think they deserve wider exposure.

Also, today was the release day for volume 3 of Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days, Boldly, Nobly, and Independent. It covers the time from the dedication of the Salt Lake City temple in 1893 to the dedication of the Bern Switzerland temple in 1955. I’ve only read the first four chapters but so far it’s pretty good. In the past church histories have almost felt like they ended, “and then they got to Utah and the seagulls ate the crickets and they lived happily ever after,” so it’s interesting to read more about this time period. (It will be really fun to read the next and final volume when it comes out in two or three years, since it will overlap my own lifetime to a large degree.) An article in the Deseret News gives more information about this volume.

Got a spare $50K?

I kind of wish I could afford to bid on this. My father was involved in programming these things.

For several years we’ve been hoping that one day a temple would be built in the Austin area, and now it’s becoming a reality.
