Every year, Scott Johnson of PowerLine posts excerpts from Independence Day speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Calvin Coolidge. They’re worth reading and pondering. I was particularly struck by what Pres. Coolidge had to say about “progress”.

I believe legalizing abortion is fundamentally dishonest.

Men can engage in promiscuous sex without much regard for what happens next, in a way that women just can’t. (If you think that‘s sexist, well, reality is sexist.) Legalized abortion gives the illusion of remedying this inequality, but abortion is a serious medical procedure that can have physical and emotional after effects that may last a lifetime.

Legalizing abortion tells women (actually, men too) that they can have sex without worrying about the consequences, but that’s a lie.
